Many Scullin Residents may not get a chance to vote
Thousands of people living in Scullin may not get a chance to vote this year because of tough new laws that make it harder for people to get on the electoral roll according to the Federal Member for Scullin Harry Jenkins MP.
“At this year’s election the electoral roll will slam shut on the day the writs are issued, which is almost always on the day the election is called,” Mr Jenkins said. “Those already on the roll will now get only three days to update their details.”
“Under the old laws voters had seven days to enrol, and the Electoral Commission had seven days to run a campaign to remind people to enrol,” Mr Jenkins explained. “After the last election 408,770 voters across Australia enrolled for the first time, re-enrolled, or changed their details.”
“If you divide that figure by the 150 House of Representatives seats around Australia, that is 2,720 people in every electorate,” Mr Jenkins said. “These so-called reforms are even more outrageous in light of the fact that last week the Howard Government admitted more than 410,000 of 18 to 25 year-old Australians were missing from the electoral roll.”
“This is not governing in the interests of young people,” Mr Jenkins said. “Young people have enough to worry about without being locked out of the democratic process because they fail to comply with the complex requirments of new laws designed to favour the Howard Government.”
“Under these new laws, by the time a young person gets home from study or work and finds out an election has been called, the electoral roll will be closed,” Mr Jenkins said.
“Whether they support the Labor Party or not, I want to ensure that as many young people from Scullin as possible who are eligible to vote get a chance to have their say on polling day,” Mr Jenkins said. “, The most important thing is that their voice is heard on election day.”
