A special ceremony was held today at the Epping RSL to present six local residents with their Australian Defence Medals (ADM).
Federal Member for Scullin Harry Jenkins MP was joined by Warrant Officer Patrick Deeker and Lance Corporal Adrian Elves from the 4th Combat Services Support Battalion at Broadmeadows to present a significant tribute from a grateful nation to those members of our community who have served our country.
“The ceremony ensures the contribution of six people to our nation’s security is recognised and that a grateful nation and community says thank you, a job well done,” Mr Jenkins said. “For the recipients the medals are due recognition and a way of remembering the companionship of their fellow servicemen and their experiences in uniform.”
Mr Jenkins presented Australian Defence Medals today to Carl Hendy, (Mill Park, ex-Army National Serviceman), Robert Linton (Mill Park, ex-Army), Phillip MacKie (Mill Park, ex-Army), Robert Muir (Mill Park, ex-Army), Graeme Roberts (Epping, ex-Army) and Laurie Walton (Epping, ex-Army Reserve).
Phillip MacKie who did an active tour of duty in Vietnam described what the ADM means to recipients. “The ADM is recognition of the fact I served my country and it is something for my kids and grand-kids to look back on in future.”
Rob Linton recalled his 20 years service with the Royal Australian Signals Corps. “I enjoyed it. I managed to serve for the bulk of my career in an operational deployment force which meant I got to serve around Australia on exercises and to visit New Zealand. I certainly wasn’t sitting behind a desk.”
Graeme Roberts who served with the Army Engineers for five years got married while he was in the Army and his wife Gwen was at today’s ceremony. He said of his military service, “I enjoyed all it. My fondest memory was when as part of our training we had a Sergeant Major who was also in charge of a squad of marching girls. One day in our drill he taught us some marching girl steps. So there was a whole squad of hobnail booted, khaki-clad soldiers doing marching girl steps. Let me put it this way, we had the best of both worlds.”
Laurie Walton received his medal with a profound sense of remembrance. “It seems like my service was a long time ago and sometimes I think it might not have happened or that it happened to someone else. Getting the ADM is something that will remind me of those times, the companionship and the friendships I made.”
For Carl Hendy, recognition of his national service is a way of passing the baton on. “The ADM will join the medals I received as the Governor of Pentridge in being handed down through my grandson to future generations.”
Robert Muir served for 20 years as an Army medic all over Australia in various units. The ADM presentation brought back the good times he had in uniform, “My fondest memory was serving with 1st Armoured Regiment at Puckapunyal. The comradeship was indicative of it being a great unit.”
Mr Jenkins said, “I would encourage all members of the community who may be eligible to submit applications either for themselves or to recognise family members who have passed away as the Australian Defence Medal can be awarded posthumously.”
Application forms are available from Mr Jenkins’ office on (03) 9467 8055
