Scullin schools to bring the kitchen to the classroom
The Federal Member for Scullin Harry Jenkins MP today invited local primary schools to register their interest in becoming part of Labor’s proposed Kitchen Garden Program.
“The Kitchen Garden Program tackles childhood obesity by getting children growing their own vegetables, cooking and learning about food as part of the school curriculum,” Mr Jenkins said.
Established by renowned restaurateur Stephanie Alexander, the Kitchen Garden Program is successfully running in a number of Victorian primary schools including locally at Findon Primary School while other local schools like Thomastown Meadows Primary School have established school vegetable gardens.
“I am inviting local schools to register their interest in being part of Labor’s national program,” Mr Jenkins said. “If successful at the election, Labor will fund 190 primary schools across Australia and I am very keen for local schools to be part of this exciting project that introduces children to great food in a fun setting, for Scullin to get its fair share.”
The program which will provide up to $60,000 to establish kitchen and garden facilities at the school, plus curriculum support through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation.
“The Kitchen Garden Program will tackle the rising trend in childhood obesity by getting children to grow, cook and eat healthy food at school,” Mr Jenkins explained. “This innovative program combines physical activity and learning about the environment in the garden with healthy eating and adventurous cooking in the kitchen.”
“Children are not necessarily interested to know if something is healthy or not, they want to know that it is fun and it tastes good,” Mr Jenkins said. “They are proud of growing, then preparing, food for each other.”
“Some schools might already have a veggie garden, but this program may allow these schools to extend their programs further,” Mr Jenkins said. “Any school community interested in establishing the program can contact me for more information on 9467 8055.”
