WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2000
People are urged to think about what they can do to help the environment on World Environment Day (Monday 5 June 2000), Harry Jenkins MP, Federal Member for Scullin and Second Deputy Speaker said today.
"World Environment Day provides us with an opportunity to raise awareness in our local community of the issues which confront the globe," Mr Jenkins said.
"Participating in kerbside activities, energy conservation and composting are simple yet very effective ways that all of us can help protect the planet.
"One of the great strengths of World Environment Day is that it is a community event. On 5 June groups such as schools, local environmental organisations and local councils promote environmental initiatives and contribute to cleaning up and protecting the environment," Mr Jenkins said.
"A prime local example has been the attempt to keep our local waterways clear of rubbish washed through the drainage system.
"This has been reinforced by education programs in local schools, teaching students of the consequences of street litter.
"And Council installing litter catching traps in the drains is an attempt to protect waters such as the Darebin Creek and the Merri Creek," Mr Jenkins said.
Mr Jenkins said that this World Environment Day was particularly significant for Australia as the United Nations has chosen our country as host for significant international environmental events on the day, such as the awarding of the Global 500 Awards in Adelaide, and in the lead up to the Olympic Games.
